BOOST YOUR AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT BY ADDING SUBTITLES.
Why should you consider subtitling your videos?
These are some reasons why subtitles are a great tool to expand your business.
INCREASE YOUR AUDIENCE.
• Video streaming accounts for 80% of all consumer internet traffic.
• 1 billion hours of videos are watched on YouTube every day.
• 85% of Facebook videos are watched on mute.
• Videos without subtitles are watched up to 66% to completion while those with subtitles are watched up to 91% to completion
• Subtitled videos get 15% more shares, 17% better reactions, and 26%more call-to-action clickthroughs
• 67% of students find subtitles helpful as a learning tool by improving comprehension.
UPGRADE YOUR SEO.
• Your videos will rank higher in search results as search engines can index the captions embedded in them. So Google and YouTube will be able to rank your video for a keyword, even if it hasn’t been added as a tag.
ENHANCE VIEWER EXPERIENCE.
• More than 60% of videos are played on smartphones, and subtitled videos are useful for those who watch them in noisy environments or where silence is important.
• 80% of social media videos are watched on mute, this means that many people are familiar with video advertisements but only a small percentage know what the product or service advertised is. With subtitles, your videos will have a wider range of output channels (imagery, audio, and text)
• Subtitles aid comprehension and memory retention, especially when talking about technical concepts.
• Giving your viewers the possibility to read through your video makes it more engaging, thus increasing viewing time. So subtitles make your video more likely to be watched to the end.
TYPES OF SUBTITLES.
There are two techniques for subtitling audiovisual content: In-Vision and Closed.
In-Vision subtitles are embedded in the video and cannot be removed.
Closed subtitles allow the spectator to select the subtitle they wish to see on screen.
FORMATS
• SRT (SubRip)
This is the most widely used format because it is compatible with most subtitle creation programs and media players. It is basic and doesn’t provide format options. It is the best alternative for social media, most website video content, and online videos like the ones you see on:
• YouTube
• Daily Motion
• Facebook
• Slideshare
• Windows Media Player
• Vimeo
• Adobe Premiere CC
• PowerPoint
• Microsoft Films & TV software
• Storyline 360 for E-Learning
• Camtasia
• and many more…
• STL (Spruce Subtitle File)
This format is used with DVD Studio Pro and its use is quite basic. It enables editing setting and styles subtitle by subtitle. Some information can be added to the text as comments which do not display onscreen.
• WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks)
It is almost the same as SRT, but it enables some styling in terms of rendering, text formatting, and positions. This format requires UTF-8 encoding that is highly friendly with HTML5 websites. It is a good option for online videos and social media.
• SAMI (Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange)
Similar to CSS or HTML, SAMI files enable styling and positioning. It is often used with media players like Windows Media Player and YouTube.
• SCC (Scenarist Closed Captions)
Encoded into Line 21, SCC subtitles or closed captions are highly customizable and commonly used for broadcast, web video, DVDs and BluRay.
• XML (Timed Text)
This format is a timed text which can include positioning instruction, styles, and formatting.
It is a very diverse format and can be used by broadcasters and online media players.
• EBU STL (European Broadcasting Union Subtitles)
Editable and highly formattable with the use of professional subtitling and closed captioning software. It is used by terrestrial channels, satellite TV service providers, television services, video on demand and professional subtitle creation labs.
These are just some of the most widely used subtitle formats, but there are many others currently used online, and also for broadcast, television, cinema, video on demand, and more.
Formatting subtitles is a highly complex process. It takes skill, training, lots of experience, and a great degree of patience to produce well written and accurately timed subtitles.
We take pride in our commitment to each piece of content we get to work on.
